Valentine’s schmalentines: a freebie and a giveaway

January 29th, 2009

[CONGRATS to JessRawk of Ottawa for being picked FIRST in the draw; she's chosen a squid tee as her prize. I'm still waiting to hear back from the runners-up... will post results soon.

I have mixed feelings about Valentine’s, mainly because I can’t believe how quick the Christmas lights get replaced with pink heart garlands these days.

FREEBIE

So I got to doodling tonight, and came up with this grumpy fellow…

No chocolates or rosepetals for this dude, no surprise picnic at the planetarium. If you’d like to keep him company (or if you’d like for him to keep yours), feel free to download and use him as your desktop wallpaper*. The actual jpg is 1024 x 768 pixels, so you may need to ’stretch to fit’ your monitor.

GIVEAWAY

It’s been a really terrific couple of weeks in my corner, and this purple grump has me in a giving mood.

THREE prizes up for grabs:

  1. The t-shirt of your choice from my shop (subject to availability).
  2. Any eight greetings cards of your choice from my shop.
  3. For the Ottawans: One pair of tickets to see the Ottawa Senators vs. Vancouver Canucks play on Thursday, February 19th evening. Scotiabank Place, 2nd level end.

All you have to do to enter is leave a comment here; make sure to include an email address where I can reach you to let you know if you’ve won!

For keeners: extra ballot if, in your comment, you let me know what your favourite item from my shop is.

Nitty gritty

  • Contest is open worldwide
  • I’ll draw three winners at 9:00 a.m. (EST) on February 12th, 2009 — first winner gets dibs on their top pick of the prizes, second winner gets next choice, and third gets the final item.
  • I’ll let the winners know by email, and will also post their names here.
  • Winners will have 24 hours to respond to me; if they haven’t responded by then, I will redraw names.

I think I’ve covered the bases… So have at it!! (And good luck :)

*Just to be all official-like, I should mention that the purple grump downloadable above is for personal use ONLY, on your desktop. I retain all ownership and reproduction rights, yo.

Pomelos make great gifts, don’t you know?

December 11th, 2008

Ah, sweet pomelos… They look like giant grapefruit, and yet they’re so much more — juicier, tastier, and MUCH more wearable.

Wiki it up: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pomelo

Ok, so my family has this tradition of getting pomelos at this time of year (’tis the season), eating the fruit, then wearing the rind as a hat. It’s something that you’ll hear of in some Asian countries, there was once a pic of a cat wearing one that got circulated online, and there’s even a picture somewhere on the web of the then-President Chen Shui-bian of Taiwan wearing one. There are dozens of pics amongst my fam of us all wearing these things — it would be blackmail material if we were embarassed by it.

So last Christmas, I decided that I would give away pomelos to some of my clients, and put together an instructional pamphlet to explain how to cut / wear / eat them. Here’s a thumbnail of the pamphlet:

They went over really well, and apparently, the tradition is being continued by a couple of folks. So if you too would like to either join in on the fun, or pass it along, please feel free to download a printable version of the pamphlet HERE. All instructions about how to print, fold and cut these is right in the PDF (two pages, 3.8 MB).

This is what it looks like once you’re done:

As for where to GET a pomelo to gift, I’ve actually been seeing them at everyday grocery stores — though they don’t look quite as large and tasty as the ones I’ve typically gotten. I get mine at an Asian Grocer in Chinatown — Kowloon Market, to be exact; the ones that I’ve tended to like most actually come in a clear wrap with ribbon, so it’s already wrapped for you!

These puppies make for a really unique, fun and interactive gift. If you’ve got kiddos around, it’s also a great activity that’ll keep them occupied for a good chunk of time.

Enjoy :)
