Return of the Rockin’ Robin

April 6th, 2010

Last year, I talked about how a mama robin set up nest in the corner of our front porch — unbelievable, since there’s so much traffic in the area (three apartments’ worth of people going in and out).

I’d said I’d post updates, but I never did (just checked, tsk tsk!), so here’s how the follow-up could’ve gone — all the photos were taken by John, with his handy telephoto lens…

June 21, 2009

This was a really sad day — it was really warm and humid out, and the baby’s heads were lolling instead of poking up in the air for food. They looked so weak and their mother hadn’t seemed to be around all day. That evening, John and I actually went digging around for bugs and worms to leave out for the Mama bird… but when we got home that evening, she was perched back on the nest.

And less than a week later, they were practically bursting out of the nest. John dubbed the chicks “The Beatles” because there were four of them, and there heads always bobbed when we passed by.

This was actually the last day they were in the nest, so I think this picture could be called “The Last Supper (in the nest)”:

Later in the afternoon, when John and I were getting home from an outing, we looked up and only one chick was left — and we watched as he hopped out. He was very unsteady on his feet and wings, but his mother called to him from our neighbour’s rooftop, and we watched as he fumbled across the lawn, down the pathway, following her tweets. It was heartwarming, to say the least.

So… why bring this all back up? Well, we came home the other night and as we stepped onto the front porch — swooosh!!! — we saw Mama Bird fly out from her nesting corner. So she’s BACK, and I guess we can expect to be charmed by another nestful of babes. Yahoo!
