Close encounters of the furry kind

August 2nd, 2009

For the last couple of summers, two of these vans park on my street from time to time:

This is my view when I poke my head into the doors:

When they see me, their tails wag with a ‘thump thump thump’, but they never bark or whine. All the doors are wide open so there’s plenty of breeze… and they all get turns out with the trainers. I think the trainers choose this neighbourhood to train because there’s a lot going on: shops, pedestrians, traffic, ramps, steps, other dogs, etc.

I do wish I could open up the cages and let these guys run around in the dog park at the end of the street… even if just for the afternoon.

In any case, it’s pretty touching to know that these guys are each going to help someone out one day.

so cute!! I have a hard time when I see ‘work’ dogs, because i want to pet and play with them – which messes the poor little guys up!

I saw one of these vans for the first time on friday, near Nepean and Lyon streets. I didn’t know that the dogs were being exercised. I love guide dogs — such good souls.
