Fruitfly kryptonite?

July 13th, 2009

If you’ve seen my posts about baby robins and bumblebee rescues, you know I’m generally an animal-lover.

I draw the line, however, at fruitflies. Yes, I even build traps to catch them — I put wine vinegar or fruit in a container, cover the top with plastic wrap, poke holes in the plastic… then the flies enter the holes, but can’t find their way out:

So the other day, I cleaned out the ceramic pot that we use as a counter compost container. We don’t let it gather much these days, or the fruitflies go nuts… After I dumped it into the main compost outside, I squirted some dish soap in, filled it with water, and left it to soak. Low and behold, the fruitflies were drawn to the suds and throwing themselves in, to their own demise!

The water in the pic started out much sudsier than you see here. The ‘bio-life’ soap I used is mango-tangerine, and it’s from Shopper’s Drug Mart’; who’d-a-thunk it doubled as fruitfly kryptonite?

(Unfortunately, some fruitflies were harmed in the making of this post… inadvertently. Usually, I set trapped fruitflies free outside, but the ones that dove to their bubblebath deaths hopefully went quickly, peacefully, and smelling nice. Sorry, dudes!)
