Just a quick note to blab about a fun project I worked on this week — which includes an illustration of a hockey goal light:

The graphic is going to be used to promote a contest for all fellow Ottawa Sens fans: the winner gets two VIP goal judge seats to a playoff game, right on the glass. Plus a bunch of other stuff like access to a buffet, intermission munchies, and access to the VIP lounge. (Click here or on the graphic above to enter.)

I’m hoping that I can come help get ballots filled out at one of the upcoming games… it involves wearing a construction hat with one of these red flashing lights on top of it and approaching peeps to enter. As you may know, I’m all over helmet-wearing AND hockey, so I hope to make it out one of these days.

In terms of the illustration, I did it in Adobe Illustrator. I drew the outlines and highlights with my Wacom Cintiq, and then all the other elements, I created with the pen tool and my old school mouse. A fun fun job, all around!

Kicking off the Sens’ season

October 9th, 2009

Last night, I went with friends to the Ottawa Senators’ first season game on home ice, against the New York Islanders. I was excited to see first-round draft pick John Tavares (whom I’ve mentioned here before) in action; he didn’t stand out particularly, but as my buddy Steve pointed out, there’s quite a jump from Juniors to pro.

The Sens won 3-2 in overtime, and the game was overall a ton of fun to watch — lots of keenness on the ice, working out some early-season kinks, and a couple of quirky goals (how did all four officials miss the puck flying into the spectator netting??!, which allowed play to continue and resulted in a Sens’ goal just seconds later… whoops!).

At one point, the team’s mascot Spartacat walked by us, so I called out to him and we snagged the very flattering photo above… as luck would have it, right when I was mid-chew on a chocolate Timbit (aka donut hole, for the non-Canucks).

The last time I was this close to Sparty was for a photoshoot with him and defenseman Chris Phillips & family; it was for a poster I laid out for a reading program in schools:

[As a side note: Chris and his wife Erin were incredibly nice. Their three kids were super-cute and really well-behaved. Pictures were taken by one of the team's official photogs, André Ringuette — and the whole thing went smoothly. Pretty outstanding, considering the dressing room was sweltering (and not exactly sweet-smelling, ahem) and the fact that Phillips' daughter had to overcome her extreme fear of Sparty.]

I’m looking forward to an exciting season… hopefully lots better than last year.

Any other hockey-heads out there? Who’re you rooting for?

Valentine’s schmalentines: a freebie and a giveaway

January 29th, 2009

[CONGRATS to JessRawk of Ottawa for being picked FIRST in the draw; she's chosen a squid tee as her prize. I'm still waiting to hear back from the runners-up... will post results soon.

I have mixed feelings about Valentine’s, mainly because I can’t believe how quick the Christmas lights get replaced with pink heart garlands these days.

So I got to doodling tonight, and came up with this grumpy fellow…

No chocolates or rosepetals for this dude, no surprise picnic at the planetarium. If you’d like to keep him company (or if you’d like for him to keep yours), feel free to download and use him as your desktop wallpaper*. The actual jpg is 1024 x 768 pixels, so you may need to ’stretch to fit’ your monitor.

It’s been a really terrific couple of weeks in my corner, and this purple grump has me in a giving mood.

THREE prizes up for grabs:

  1. The t-shirt of your choice from my shop (subject to availability).
  2. Any eight greetings cards of your choice from my shop.
  3. For the Ottawans: One pair of tickets to see the Ottawa Senators vs. Vancouver Canucks play on Thursday, February 19th evening. Scotiabank Place, 2nd level end.

All you have to do to enter is leave a comment here; make sure to include an email address where I can reach you to let you know if you’ve won!

For keeners: extra ballot if, in your comment, you let me know what your favourite item from my shop is.

Nitty gritty

  • Contest is open worldwide
  • I’ll draw three winners at 9:00 a.m. (EST) on February 12th, 2009 — first winner gets dibs on their top pick of the prizes, second winner gets next choice, and third gets the final item.
  • I’ll let the winners know by email, and will also post their names here.
  • Winners will have 24 hours to respond to me; if they haven’t responded by then, I will redraw names.

I think I’ve covered the bases… So have at it!! (And good luck :)

*Just to be all official-like, I should mention that the purple grump downloadable above is for personal use ONLY, on your desktop. I retain all ownership and reproduction rights, yo.
