Radio gaga, Radio googoo

December 2nd, 2009

At about 5:40 p.m. EST today (Wednesday, December 2nd), I will be (along with two other crafters) interviewed on CHUO radio by Mitchell Caplan on his show, Click Here.

You can tune into 89.1 FM if you’re in Ottawa.
Or you can listen online by clicking on “Listen Now” from the CHUO page — either MP3 or streaming.

We’ll be chatting about being vendors at the upcoming Ladyfest Tarts ‘n’ Crafts Show, which is this coming Saturday (I’ve chatted here about designing the poster before).

I wonder if we’ll get to wear those mammoth earphones…

[Radio gaga & googoo, indeed. This was another gem from the pics I scanned for our wedding slide show. My sis looks so cute, and I'm very well-fed. You can imagine why one of my uncles used to call me "Ball".]

Anyway… have a listen, if you please. And send all the “don’t sound like a doofus” vibes you can!

Tarts n’ Crafts — the making of a look

April 24th, 2009

Above is the web version for a poster I recently put together for the Ladyfest Ottawa folks — for the Tarts n’ Crafts sale, where I’ll be partaking as a vendor. I was thrilled to have made it into the show in the first place, so when they also asked me to help out with a new look for their posters this year, I was doubly stoked. The added bonus that my logo could go on the poster and LFO website was icing on the cake (or tart, ha ha!).

This was a particularly fun project, so I thought I’d share the steps we took to get to the final piece. We started with a briefing, where I learned that they wanted a funky, hands-on look to go with their cheeky new show name, something where they could change up background colours for the different seasons.

I did all the illustration on my beloved Cintiq, and came up with:

The committee agreed that 1a worked better for them. They asked that I try it with a purple background, swap the imagery so that it read “XO” (which is, of course, more commonly written than “OX”, unless you’re talking bovine), and replace the overly-literal tart with something crafty. Once I’d done that, we ran with it, making the letters more similar in size and with a couple of different colour variations:

They went with mock up 3a — and here’s the final poster in its entirety, with a close-up:

These Ladyfest shows are definitely the most funky and hip craft sales I’ve been to. For all you Ottawa folks (or for anyone who’ll be visiting the city for Mother’s Day weekend), drop on by the Jack Purcell Community Centre (320 Elgin) on Saturday May 9th, between 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. I’ll be there with my jack and jill line, PLUS giclée prints and NEW shirts designs too. Can’t wait, and hope to see you there!
