Plaskett and Folkfest and ankles, oh my

August 24th, 2009

I had every intention of checking out much of Sunday at the Ottawa Folk Festival this year, having already missed out on Friday and Saturday (with acts like Amy Millan and Kinnie Starr among others…) due to prior engagements. Then I turned my dang ankle in an ultimate frisbee game on Sunday afternoon, and wimped out on the idea of standing in a crowd for hours on end.

The couple of hours I did catch were worth the ensuing throbbing foot — the highlight for me was, as my friends will guess, Joel Plaskett (whom I’ve posted about before). A few of the many videos I caught:

Rewind Rewind Rewind

Natural Disaster

Nothing More to Say to You

There were masses of people in lawn chairs who had been settled in the crowd all day… and from what I could tell, I think Joel won over many a new fan. He and his Dad were in fine form, despite being teemed by mosquitos throughout the show. Too bad some of the more eager Plaskett fans who wanted to dance were asked by security staff to sit; this might be a sign for the fest to have a standing/dancing area in future.

Wonderful hosting by dear friend Amanda Putz and new cookie buddy Tom Power:

As I hobbled off the festival grounds, I lamented missing out on Mr. Something Something at the Dance Tent, but was pleasantly impressed by the sounds of Jason Lang.

Hopefully, the Ottawa Folk Festival will have just as impressive a line-up next year… and I’ll be able to catch a lot more of it!
