After the fire

January 21st, 2010

Just a few blocks from where I live in the Glebe, there was a massive five-alarm fire on Monday at an 18-unit apartment building. I took the photo above while running errands today; the remains of the building look like a nightmarish dollhouse.

The view from the front:

Luckily, no one was hurt. On Monday night, I was stupefied at the scene of firefighters as they gushed water on the structure — many hours after the blaze started. The street was closed off, and people were milling about. I saw a firefighter bring a cat out to one of the tenants of the building and she thanked him profusely, as she thought she’d lost her pet in the blaze. It was touching to see that, even while still probably in shock about losing her home and everything in it, this girl could have a moment of relief and happiness.

Fellow Glebe-ites and bloggers at Apt. 613 posted a thorough write-up about the fire, including how people can help out the residents of 114 Glebe Avenue, who are all now homeless.

that’s my old apartment building. In fact, I *think* that green room you see in the first photo was my dining room. So sad. And I hear they suspect arson. Thanks for the link to help!

That first photo is almost surreal. It is nice to see the community rallying, but my word, that photo…

It must be so strange to see the rooms that were your home and some of your stuff exposed like that for all of the world to see.
